What can we grow
where we live?

Grow what works where YOU live. Start with local conditions and advice; a zone number is only one part of a good plan.

Optional U.S. ZIP lookup · for grown-ups

Find your winter-cold zone.

A USDA plant hardiness zone helps you choose perennial plants for winter cold. It does not tell you when to plant vegetables or whether every crop will thrive.

When you press Check zone, the entered ZIP code is sent to the ArcGIS service used by the official USDA map. That service also receives your connection information. Food Forest Kids does not store your ZIP code. Do not enter a child's location.

Official USDA map · How to use it. ZIP results are a guide; use the map for your exact spot.

Beyond the zone

Ask better local questions.

  • Where are we, and what season is it?
  • What temperatures and frost risks matter now?
  • How much sunlight does the actual spot receive?
  • What rain and reliable water are available?
  • What space, safe soil and access do we have?
  • Which plants suit our climate and local rules?
  • Who will care for the growing space over time?

A packet, local growing calendar and local adviser can help choose a manageable first plant. No ZIP code alone can answer every question.

Find someone who knows your place.

Choose locally suitable, permitted plants. Do not move seeds or plants between places without adult checks of suitability and movement rules.
